Phil was born into a
family of spiritually-minded people. Prayer and bible study were
important to them. Early on he developed strong worship habits. At
the age of seven he gave his heart to Jesus. He loved inspirational
bible stories and memorized portions of scripture.
His love and
pursuit of art served him well as a ministerial student in college. He
gave “chalk-talks” to church youth groups. Using pastel chalk he
illustrated Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane as he talked of
God’s love for all His children.
Phil recounts several significant
turning-point experiences in his life. Once, while in college, his
uncle Paul, a traveling song evangelist, gave him a copy of Earl
Nightingale’s,
The Strangest Secret - a record he
listened to over and over. “Throughout all history, the great wise men and
philosophers and prophets have disagreed with one another on many
different things,” Nightingale said. “It is only on this one point that
they are in complete and unanimous agreement.” The “secret” is that one
literally becomes what he thinks about.
Marcus Aurelius said: “A man’s
life is what his thoughts make of it.” As philosopher & psychologist
William James put it, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a
human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.”
According to Jesus in Mark 9:23: “If thou canst believe, all things are
possible to him that believeth.” In William Shakespeare’s words:
“Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by
fearing to attempt.” Armed with this knowledge Phil created
abundance of what was needed and wanted in his life.
Throughout
his life whenever he faced a problem he turned to his Guide within for the
answer. He would ask a question and then be quiet and his “spirit
guides” would tell him what he needed to know. Later he learned this
was the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Another
turning point came when Phil attended Werner Erhard’s
est training in 1975, where he
experienced a transformational shift in his consciousness. He discovered
“Getting it” is a matter of choosing what you got. It's much easier
to ride the horse in the direction he's going. You don’t have to go
looking for love when it is where you come from.
A third
transformational experience came when Phil discovered
A
Course In Miracles. Phil had always been a
“self-help, success-motivation, spiritual-devotional” kind of book junkie.
But this book was different. It spoke of Love as the opposite of fear;
Forgiveness as accepting what is; and Truth as just being what’s so. It
transformed him from a “human-doing” to a “human-Being” by living in the
Now.
He and his
wife, Judy, share the text reading and workbook lesson of the Course
every morning as they start their day. They’ve been studying the
Course for eight years. They attend a local study group and
occasionally attend meetings around the country.
Retired from
a career in computers – 15 years with IBM and 18 years self employed as a
computer consultant – Phil now spends his time communing with Holy Spirit
and Mother Nature while gardening. He also develops and maintains websites
for non-profit organizations on a volunteer basis. Phil says, “I am
here only to be truly helpful. I am here to represent Him Who sent
me. My greatest desire is to be of service to Thee Oh Lord.”
